Influencing your Life Through books

The amazing world of books hold such powers that has ever since, remained fully untapped by men. Since the conception of the idea of writing by man, from the invention of primitive writing to the latest advanced age of modern writing and publishing, myriad of books have been written on diverse topics and subjects under the sun. It has therefore been of utmost significance to the academic and information seeking milieu to keep abreast through certain books as regards their respective subjects and individual line of interest.
Books are in actual sense, the treasure piece of information, peculiar to the purpose and audience for which they are actually written, varying from academic, informative, technical, leisure and personal development. This article is however not of the sole aim of classifying books into major categories, but of the main essence of revealing how books can really go a long way to influence your life in a very positive way, thereby deriving maximum result to the time spent in reading such. Hence, we intend to keep close to the very aspect of personal development.
First of all, books preserve and hold a repertoire of information and knowledge. When we read we gain a detailed exposure to a wide range of information and essential knowledge which could not have been verbally disseminated but have been well preserved. Hence philosophers believed that a written account, could last for about a hundred years.
Reading a book makes available the wisdom of the past. Books can be said to bridge the gap between the past and the future, this is because past works of research are made available and you are better prepared for future challenges equipped with knowledge.
The popular saying is true ‘What you don’t know can kill you’ this is because, Ignorance is in itself a deadly disease. Reading the right books liberates your mind. It shows you what is obtainable When?, Where? and How?
Reading a book takes you farther than you are and you gain the wisdom of the sage without going through all their personal experiences which might take time or be unpalatable. The right book in your hand will wouldn’t make you to look farther than you need to.

WHATZ UP ABOUT ASUU STRIKE?
The National Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Dr. Awuzie voiced last week that the government is yet to sit with the body at the negotiation table he noted that they have refused the 40% raise offered by the government and stating emphatically that they still await a formal negotiation.
REBRANDING?
Yes! You all must have heard about the ‘REBRANDING CAMPAIGN’ It has really generated a lot of noise, criticisms and much attention ever since it was spear headed and launched by the Hon. Minister for Communication Prof. Dora Akunyili.I am not against the whole campaign, but I believe we need to walk the Walk in so much way as we talk the Talk. What do you feel about this?

I wrote an article few months ago on this issue, I expect your comments.
Enjoy!

Rebranding the Nigerian Police Force
It is a known fact that the Nigerian Police force has evolved over the years, yet it has since suffered from various image rupturing ills. This is obvious as the police seem to be the major institution which mirrors the corruption syndrome which permeates our country, whereas the problem of corruption is not only particular to the Police but it’s rife across the various strata of our society.
The saying ‘one bad egg spoils the rest’ best describes the case of the Nigerian Police. Incessant collection of bribe and kickbacks at different checkpoints across the country, illegal dealings in ammunition and other various ills and demeaning acts of misconduct across the ranks and files of the force has long robbed the Nigerian Police of her dignity and nobility unlike their other counterparts in other advanced countries of the world.
The dire need to redeem the image of Nigerian Police could not have come at a better time than this, when corruption and all other criminal acts are perpetrated in diverse forms in the nooks and crannies of the Country, a time when university graduates are churned out by the thousands and none or very few see the need to serve the fatherland by enlisting in the Nigeria Police. A total rebranding and general overhauling of this mercenary is of significant importance.
This rebranding must however start from the average Nigerian youth. This is an issue of re-orientation of values and the prioritization of the Nigerian interest. It is a duty for which all hands must be on deck. Educational institution should see the need that the interest of the country be inculcated in the students, while religious institution should uphold values of service and loyalty to one’s country, and all stakeholders and particularly the Nigerian Police should channel needed resources to seminars and conferences targeted towards rebranding the force while adequate measures be put in place to ensure that recruitment is based on standard ethics ,thus disproving the fact that the force is a dumping ground for the unemployed, miscreants and never-do-well citizens.
Changing the image of the Nigerian Police, will to a very great extent restore professional dimension to the job and instill discipline and respect to the Force and this will bring us very close to the threshold of the new Nigeria that we all dream of.
