Selection Process

The Mandela Washington Fellowship is conducted as a merit-based open competition. After the deadline, all eligible applications will be reviewed by a selection panel. Chosen semifinalists will be interviewed by the U.S. embassies or consulates in their home countries. If selected for an interview, applicants must provide a copy of their passport (if available) or other government-issued photo identification to verify eligibility.

Who is eligible to apply?

Applicants will not be discriminated against on the basis of race, color, gender, religion, socio-economic status, disability, sexual orientation, or gender identity. The Mandela Washington Fellowship is open to young African leaders who meet the following criteria:

·         Are between the ages of 25 and 35 at the time of application submission, although exceptional applicants younger than 25 will be considered.

·         Are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the U.S.

·         Are eligible to receive a United States J-1 visa.

·         Are proficient in reading, writing, and speaking English.

·         Are citizens and residents of one of the following countries: Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Cabo Verde, Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Republic of the Congo, Cote d’Ivoire, Djibouti, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gabon, The Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sao Tome and Principe, Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, South Sudan, Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. 

The U.S. Department of State and IREX reserve the right to verify all of the information included in the application. In the event that there is a discrepancy, or information is found to be false, the application will immediately be declared invalid and the applicant ineligible.

Applications not meeting the above technical eligibility requirements will not be forwarded to the selection committee. If you do not meet the technical eligibility requirements for this program, we invite you to visit exchanges.state.gov for information on other U.S. Department of State exchange opportunities.

What are the criteria for selection?

Selection panels will use the following criteria to evaluate applications (not in order of importance):

·         A proven record of leadership and accomplishment in public service, business and entrepreneurship, or civic engagement.

·         A demonstrated commitment to public or community service, volunteerism, or mentorship.

·         The ability to work cooperatively in diverse groups and respect the opinions of others.

·         Strong social and communication skills.

·         An energetic, positive attitude.

·         Demonstrated knowledge, interest and professional experience in the sector/track selected.

·         A commitment to return to Africa and apply leadership skills and training to benefit the applicant’s country and/or community after they return home.

Application Information

The application will collect basic information and will include questions regarding the applicant’s professional and academic experience, including educational background; honors and awards received; extracurricular and volunteer activities; and English language proficiency. We will also request a résumé (with dated educational and professional background), and personal information (name, address, phone, email, country of citizenship). Additional elements, such as letters of recommendation or university transcripts, are OPTIONAL and may supplement your application.

Applicants are invited for Andela Nigeria Fellowship Cycle XXVI. This fellowship is open to Nigerian applicants to pursue technical leadership programme.

The aim of this fellowship is designed to shape you into an elite software developer and challenge yourself to constantly improve personally and professionally throughout the four years of the Fellowship.

Andela is a global engineering organization that extends engineering teams with world-class software developers. The company recruits the most talented developers on the African continent, shapes them into technical leaders, and places them as full-time distributed team members with companies that range from Microsoft and IBM to dozens of high-growth start-ups.

Course Level: Fellowship is available  to pursue technical leadership programme

Scholarship Award: This fellowship will cover the following:

Stage 1: Application and Aptitude Assessment

• First, you’ll complete a free application, which lets us learn more about you. Once we receive your application, we’ll email you an online test that measures logical reasoning and personality fit.
• Andela does not have any degree or diploma requirements. However, if you have completed University or have a Higher National Diploma from a polytechnic, you must complete your one-year National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) before applying to Andela, unless you have been formally exempted.

Stage 2: Home Study

• Then you’ll need to complete an introduction to software development self-study course focused on Python. You can find the downloadable version of this course here. During the course, you’ll complete a technical test that will evaluate your knowledge of the content you’ve learned.

Stage 3: In-Person Interview

• Based on performance on the Aptitude Assessment and Technical test, we invite a select group of applicants to interview with Andela. If selected, you’ll receive an email 1 week prior to the interview stage, inviting you to a panel of interviews made up of staff members and software developers at Andela.

Stage 4: Two-Week Boot Camp

• Successful applicants participate in a two-week, full-time Boot Camp at an Andela Campus led by our senior developers. You’ll be expected to learn independently as well as work on a team to deliver a final project. We’re looking for work ethic, passion, and teamwork.

Stage 5: Acceptance

• The highest performing participants are accepted into Andela’s four-year Technical Leadership Program.

In 2017, NWAG plans to award 37 one-time scholarships, one per state of origin as well as one for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), in the amount of fifty thousand Naira (N50,000) each, to Nigerian female, undergraduate students in Nigerian universities.
Worth of Scholarship: Fifty thousand naira (N50,000) each
Requirements: An applicant must be a Nigerian female, undergraduate student in a Nigerian University. All applications must include the following:
Proof of State of Origin – Letter of Origination from the university or a letter from your local government office.
Two Letters of Recommendation from any two of the following: Church Pastor/Mosque Imam, Village Head, Local Government Chairperson or one of your Lecturers.
One Letter of Recommendation from either the Dean of your Faculty/School or your Head of Department.
Photocopy of your current university student identification card
A current photograph of yourself
An explanation of why you need and should receive the scholarship (not more than one-half typed double spaced page).
A type-written, double –spaced, two-page essay on:
“How has the current inflation and its resultant high cost of living in Nigeria, affected the quality of education in Nigeria?”

 New Zealand Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan (CSFP)

Eligible Students: Applicants must be applying for direct entry to a Masters or PhD programme at a New Zealand university
Courses: Scholarships are available for pursuing Master’s or PhD studies in New Zealand.
Award Details: The entitlements of the Scholarship include full tuition fees, a living allowance (paid fortnightly), an establishment allowance, medical and travel insurance, travel between applicants home country.
Application Deadline: Each Nominating Agency has been asked to set the closing date for applications for their country.

It was a day at work few years ago while working for a Chinese Telecom Organization as a Corps member. I was undergoing the one-year mandatory (NYSC), National Youth Service Corps- a Federal Government initiative for new graduates in my country -Nigeria.
It was break time so I started out a discussion with a colleague, who was Chinese.

Cheng ( not his real name) had this new and terrific device of a phone, " That's a nice phone you have there" I observed, "can I please take a quick look? " I asked, "Sure" he said, handing me his 6 inches, black android phone with lots of Chinese characters, but nice apps and cool feel.

Android phones were the new thing then, taking over a big share of the Market from BlackBerry phones and pushing Nokia phones down to near zero existence. A week before, a friend and colleague had just given me his own old phone, a Motorola milestone, part of the earliest androids.

We spoke on the phone configurations and features, then I got more curious and I asked, " how much...?" He replied " It's not in Nigeria, now, but I got it for $200 dollars?"
$200 to me was probably much, then. So he read the look of surprise on my face and gave me the shortest talk in self development and motivation "Enhance yourself, when you enhance yourself you can buy this"

While technology evolves and inflation and exchange rates, world over are not static, the underlying lesson from that event, was that of passing phases, stages in personal growth and development and the need for continuous development.

The Japanese principle for this is Kaizen; which is the art of continuous development. When you constantly increase yourself, grow your capacity for knowledge, when you enhance yourself with the right skills, knowledge, habits,mindset and network, you will get to the point where you are able to take on more than you can financially, professionally and generally take.
A new version of you would have evolved!
